I am referring to the main plate. I have had several ETA 2824-2's where the winding pinion had worn away the main plate so much that the winding and sliding pinions no longer made proper contact, and slip during manual winding. No lubrication is called for at this point, but I do apply a small bit of grease there on every one I service.

Note that the watch in question that had this wear was sent in just for routine service, and when I checked it on the timing machine it was actually running with good amplitude and positional variation - sort of blows the theory that many have that as long as it's running fine, there's nothing bad going on inside.

You could argue this problem can also show up on a manual winding watch, but I rarely see it this severe on those (even 40+ year old vintage watches), and wear in this area seems to be quite common on some modern automatics. Keep in mind these watches are less than 10 years old.
