"During the World War II (from 1939 to 1945), Panerai was still the official supplier of military instruments to the Royal Italian Navy. On the request of the Italian Navy, Panerai developed underwater instruments like watches and chronographs for navy missions. We like to introduce the MARE NOSTRUM, the first Panerai chronograph designed for deck officers of the Italian Navy in 1943. Due to the World War II, Mare Nostrum chronographs never went into production and remained at the prototype stage.
Only three Mare Nostrum chronographs were created in 1943. The 5218-301/A, 302 and 304 are its re-edition. In 1993, Panerai made limited production of 5218-301/A, the first re-edition of MARE NOSTRUM (1943) that runs of approximately 492 of 990 pieces aimed at the civilian market. Furthermore, 5218-301/A is the first blue dial launched by Panerai.
In 1996, Sylvester Stallone (Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone, nicknamed SLY), a well-known Hollywood star also a frantic follower of Panerai, cooperated with Panerai to customize a special edition chronograph called SLYTECH MARE NOSTRUM, including 5218-302 and 5218-304 with blue dial to express his respect and enthusiasm for the ocean. In addition, 100 pieces of 5218-301A were reworked as 50 pieces of 5218-302 and 50 pieces of 5218-304. However, only 32 and 31 pieces aimed at the civilian market respectively. They are always the desirable collection of senior Paneristi.
The main difference between 5218-302 and 5218-304 is that titanium bezel of 5218-304 was polished without the tachymeter scale, and distinguished by the signature of Sylvester Stallone engraved on the back! They are rare models created in the pre-V or pre-Vendome period! Especially the 5218-304, it has become valuable collector’s item.
It is fortunate that we collected a set of 5218-304 and we like to share some pictures with you!
According to an informal source, Panerai (still in Pre-Vendome period) and Sylvester Stallone intended to develop a new series called “SLYTECH”, including 5218-302 and 5218-304. However, the project determined due to the acquisition by Vendome/Richemont Group.
After the acquisition, Panerai launched the MARE NOSTRUM PAM 006/007/008 with various dial colors. They were designed based on MARE NOSTRUM 5218-301/A. Furthermore, PAM 300 was even a perfect re-edition of the first Panerai Chronograph produced in 1943. Let us compare.
